Bericht Oktober 2013

Ekuthuleni Carpentry Project

We are in the final lap of the current training course. Our lessons have intensified in practice and in theory. In the classroom we have looked at Business and Marketing. Firstly it is important to understand how businesses generally function depending on whether one is a retailer a producer or a service provider. Then we look at specific issues that the students, soon qualified carpenters, will encounter in the business world of Zimbabwe.

We also looked at Market Research, where they as individuals hope to start their businesses, how large that market is and what the demand for products is they hope to produce, and how these factors can vary from area to area. We have looked at Consumer Research, looking at the attitudes of the customers towards the products. THUS WE ALWAYS EMPHASIZE ON PRODUCING QUALITY PRODUCTS AT A FAIR PRICE. We have also looked at Communication, which is a vital part of their business and the different methods of communication. The methods of communication they are likely to meet in their working environments, spoken word, written word, visual aids. We are currently looking at Quotations, and will also be looking at budgeting and reinvestment. In the workshop we have looked at construction of different types of roofs and various finishes that can be used on wood, metal and walls amongst other things.

Also in the workshop – as continuation on communication – we have given the students projects using visual aids. The aim is for them to get used to interpreting what they see on a picture and producing it in the workshop. They have worked on quite a number of small projects, stools, corner shelf, and telephone wall unit among other small projects. We are happy with their progress and we plan to continue giving these visuals aids.
We have also introduced them to the bigger machinery like the circular saw and surfaceplaner in the Production Unit. They are now familiar with most of the portable power tools. We plan to give them a lot of projects to test their skills and give them more practice as they come to a close of their training.

The first interviews for the next training course starting in January 2013 have been conducted and will continue through to December. It is always an exciting prospect to start work with a new group.

Johannes Blank will be visiting us towards the end of November or early December and will help to conduct the students’ final examinations.

The graduation is going o take place on the 14th of December, and we hope that the students family members will be able to join us on that day.

Ekuthuleni Schreiner Projekt
